Morbus Hansen (MH), commonly known as leprosy, is a chronic and contagious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae). This condition primarily affects the peripheral nerves, skin, mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, muscles, bones, and testicles, while sparing the central nervous system. Transmission occurs through the upper respiratory tract and direct skin contact, typically requiring prolonged interaction with individuals who have the disease. Specifically, leprosy spreads when viable bacteria leave the respiratory tract of lepromatous individuals and enter another person's body. Symptoms include muscle weakness, numbness in skin patches, thickened nerves, and overall skin numbness. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) as an effective treatment strategy aimed at interrupting the transmission cycle, preventing drug resistance, shortening treatment duration, promoting adherence to treatment, and avoiding disability. This Community Service initiative seeks to enhance public health by educating the community on leprosy control measures.
